Splurge or Steal

 This is super fun game that I love to play! I try to guess if an item is a splurge or a steal when I see something I like in either a magazine, online or on someone out on the town. (Yes, I'm that much of a fashion geek!) People.com has fun fashion quiz as well. You guess which piece the celebrity is wearing is the least expensive. I'm not always right. Designers, especially on the low end, have really done their research and made more affordable clothing with luxe looking fabrics.

As you know, I am a huge fan of jumpsuits! It is a simple piece that allows you to style it for both casual or dressy events. They require minimal thought which is something every woman needs from time to time. A piece that every woman needs in her wardrobe! I've found two jumpsuits that I adore but can't decide if I should spend less or more. So, I'm letting you as a reader decide.

Which one is the splurge and which is a Steal?

Check back tomorrow and see which one was the splurge or steal, which one I actually purchased and how I styled it!

Here is a look back at how I've styled and worn jumpsuits.

Peaceful Easy Feeling

Sweater: Ann Taylor (similar); Shirt: J.Crew Factory (similar); Cords: LOFT; Flats: Target;
 Necklace: H&M; Sunnies: Prada (gift); Bracelets: Fossil, JewelMint; Ralph Lauren;
Watch: Emporio Armani (similar); Lip Color: MAC Girl About Town

I am a huge fan of the Eagles. They are my go-to band for summer and I seem to have a memory for almost every one of their songs. Peaceful Easy Feeling is exactly how I would describe this look. These pale, pink cords have been a favorite of mine for several years and there was just something about this pairing that made me feel so at ease. Even the photos turned out to be unfussy and laid back. Just like the Eagles.

Another Day

Jacket: Ann Taylor (similar); Top: J.Crew; Jeans: J. Brand via Gilt (similar); Belt: Anthropologie;
 Boots: Steven by Steve Madden; Sunnies: Prada (gift); Bracelets: J.Crew/BaubleBar;

What a difference a day and look makes! Yesterday, I blogged about body image and how I am so unhappy with mine. It was loosely based on the outfit I wore on Saturday but it also has to do with the fact that I'm heavier than I want to be. Well, I'm not saying that I'm any thinner today, or that I love my body either, but this look makes a huge difference!

The long, full jeans create a lengthening effect and who doesn't want to appear taller. Also, they're high waisted which really helps in the trouble tummy area. Although the jacket has a high collar, it doesn't surround my face like the turtleneck which I truly think enhanced the roundness. And when all else fails, wear bright colors which just gives everything a pop! A slight smirk doesn't hurt either!

Self-Esteem and Body Image

What is about women and their obsession over body image? And that could be a huge generalization so why don't I narrow that down and say, what is about me and my obsession over body image? I'm pretty sure I've worried about my body since I was a teen. Growing up a ballerina, I was constantly "dieting" to ensure I looked thin from all angles. During barre work, a dancer examines their lines in the mirror which also means you can see what your body looks like in a leotard and tights. It's daunting! I auditioned for the New York City Ballet's summer program the summer of my junior year in high school. My teacher informed me that I needed to lose 15 pounds before the audition. The audition was two weeks away. So, in order to lose the weight, I was put on a water and orange diet. It worked.  I dropped the weight. At 5' 6" I weighed 111! I auditioned and didn't make it. I was told I was still a little heavy! Consequently, I can't look an orange in the eye to this day!

Before McKinley, I was a solid size six. Sometimes, but never very often, I could wear a four. At my "heaviest", I wore a size ten. I told myself all the time how fat I was. I worked out at least two/three times a week and performed in shows from time to time. If I was cast as a dancer in a show, that meant I was dancing roughly five days a week. Not a bad way to exercise. While pregnant with McKinley I gained the maximum weight I wanted to which was 30 pounds. Post McKinley, which is coming upon two years, I still have roughly 10 pounds to go. But, that last 10 pounds is always the hardest, especially when I don't work out at all and when I eat whatever I feel like shoving into my mouth! I honestly have no one to blame but me!

    At my thinnest (again pre-McKinley)...

So why I am telling you all of this? Over the weekend, I decided that Mother Nature was not going to bring me down (by Sunday she had worn me into a pulp) and I wore the springiest look I could for a day of errands. It was dreary, cold Saturday and a forecast of 6-10 inches of snow was on its way in. I was not going to wear my traditional dark jeans, tall black boots and heavy sweater! Instead I reached for my mint green jeans from Ann Taylor. I paired them with a cream t-neck sweater, soft pastel pink/coral scarf, tall black boots (because it worked) and a cropped, cream, wool coat. I was so excited to take pics and share the look with all of you. That was until I took a look at them...

I hate them! I hate everything but the look. And the biggest issue I have with them is that my face looks so unbelievably round and fat! I remember the last time this happened to me. It was on New Years Eve. I saw a picture of myself a week or so later and immediately started the workout/diet routine. I guess seeing yourself in photos is the first sign to make something happen. I'm not saying I'm going to something extreme, like oranges and water, but I do really need to make something happen. I need to make time to make something happen.

At my heaviest (pre-McKinley) which caused the change in habits....

I can't be the only one who feels this way, right? What causes us to feel this way? Is it the super thin Hollywood actresses? Marilyn Monroe was a size 14 during her hay day and men loved her. "They" say that average size female in America is a size 12. Why can't I be satisfied with my size eight/ten self? It's an age old question we will never be able to answer. In the mean time....

Here is one of the photos taken over the weekend.

Embellishments - Part II

  Remember back in February when I blogged about embellishments? And because they were on-trend I made my own. Well, they are back for spring and better than ever! I am loving the styles that J.Crew has created! The high neck, sleeveless top is my all time favorite but can't decide between white or chambray. However, I love the sweaters as well. The collar is removable on the linen sweater and both options mean you don't have to think about your jewelry.

Over at Piperlime, the embellishments are in greater detail. The beaded tank is perfect for day to night. Perfect under a black blazer for work. Remove it for a Friday Happy Hour and add a bold red lip. Same goes the Kate Spade sleeveless blouse.

As you can see, the sweaters are super versatile. Cute with shorts for early spring but dramatic when paired with skinnies. The scattered beading on the shoulder is so amazing! Talk about bling!

 This time around, I'm thinking I will invest in my embellishments as my skills in sewing are pretty 101. So glad the trend is still hot for spring. I was never one for the Beadazzled look of the 90s but love the chicness of 2013!

Polka Dots and Leather

Top: Target (similar); Leather Tee: Piperlime; Pants: J.Crew (similar); Heels: WHBM (similar);
Bangles: Silpada; Ring: Banana Republic (old)

Earlier in the week I blogged about leather for spring. This top was one of my picks from the slew of pieces on Piperlime. I wore it back in February in a similar fashion as it's just too cold to go with short sleeves! I love this pairing! The polka dots add whimsy, the bow tie is a great accent in lieu of jewelry and the teal is such a bright color to bring life to black on black. Despite the wind and chill, this color and print combo gave me a little glimpse into what spring might have in store.
