My DIY - The Silver Glitter Oxfords

Do you remember these? I started talking about them back in early May, or possibly even April, and I did work on them. And once completed, it never stopped raining. I was never going to attempt wearing them in rain, considering the paint peeled, in sunshine, when just walking around.

So I had the idea to glitter them in hopes of being able to wear them after three years of having them hide under the bed. And I followed the format I used when creating the glitter tennis shoes from Honestly...WTF.

Here's What You'll Need:
Old Oxfords, A bowl for mixing, Mod Podge for Fabric, Coarse Glitter, Sponge Brushes, Blue Tape

I started by prepping the shoes. I removed the tassels from the oxfords. (And note the coffee mug. If you're doing this in the morning, you might need to add coffee to your "What You Need" list.)

Then I started taping off the areas of the shoes that I didn't want covered in glitter. You don't have to use blue tape. It's just what I had on hand.

Then it was time to start mixing. I started with the glue and added a couple of spoon fulls. Then I added the glitter. I mixed until all the glitter was combined and then assessed the amount. I added more glitter then mixed again until I got the consistency I wanted. Since I knew I wanted to really coat the shoes in glitter, I added way more glitter than glue.

From there, I started applying the glue concoction to both shoes. I let that dry completely and applied another. I applied another two coats after that, equaling four coats total.  I probably could have gotten away with three, but I added one more for good measure. (Note: It looks like a lot of glue right now and very little glitter. I promise, once the glue starts drying, all you can see is the glitter.)

And here they are!! The completed Oxfords! Obviously, I removed all the blue tape and added the tassels back on. I just figured I didn't really need to photograph those steps. That would be like watching these shoes dry....

I adore how they turned out! And the glitter/glue held up! I wore these all day yesterday and I even grocery shopped in them. You know that's a lot of walking around! I can't wait to get a full on outfit pic with them!

What do you think? Would you make silver glitter oxfords? Let alone wear them? They just make a look pop! And, you definitely shine while wearing them!

DIY Preview......

Good Morning and Happy Monday! I hope you all had a wonderful weekend. I know I did. We were busy enjoying the gorgeous weather on Saturday and spent a fabulous Mother's Day together. Just the weekend anyone could hope for.

So here we are on another Monday morning and I'm bringing you a little DIY preview. I was hoping to work on these last week, I even made a trip to Michael's to get all of my supplies, but when I got home I couldn't find my Mod Podge! So bummed! So instead of blogging about a completed project, I thought I would show you what I hope to do!

Do you remember these shoes? I worked on them back in 2013, and I loved how they turned out, but they didn't stand the test of time....or walking! After all the primer, paint, and sealer, the paint still peeled off after the first couple of steps.

If you look closely, you can see the crease marks. I was so disappointed. And I apparently put them under the bed and forgot about them. How do I know they were under the bed? I found them just the other day. And I still loved them, but knew I just couldn't wear them in the condition they were in. So, I had an idea.....

Let's throw some silver glitter on them! Okay, I won't just throw glitter on them, I will paint glitter on them using the method from the glitter tennis shoes I replicated from Honestly....WTF tutorial in 2012! I think it could totally work. Fingers crossed!

Hoping to get these little guys finished by the end of the week, but we all know how the best laid plans can go..... It could be next month!

See you back here tomorrow!

DIY - Metallic Silver Oxfords

I blogged a couple of weeks ago about the metallic trend and how it's still going strong for fall. Within that post, I featured a pair of silver oxfords on J.Crew and I have been obsessed with getting a pair. I love the shiny edge to such a classic shoe.

J.Crew also overs a super cute Penny Loafer version, another iconic shoe with a trendy twist.

And than I started thinking.... I have a pair of nude slip-on Steve Madden oxfords that I was going to sell. Why don't I spray paint those silver and make my own pair of oxfords. I would be saving myself money but still getting the pair I've been dying to have!

Here is what you'll need:

Slip-On Oxfords
Spray Paint
Clear Sealer
Black Sharpie
Masking Tape
Cardboard
Newspaper
Plastic Gloves

Start by taping off the soles all the way around the shoe. Take off the tassels and tape off the small piece across the shoes. Place newspaper inside the shoes so you don't spray the insides! You don't want silver all over your feet and socks do you?

Take the cardboard and shoes into a well ventilated area. I chose the backyard, but you can use your garage or basement. Just make sure you have it ventilated! Start spraying! Make sure you apply several even coats and get in all the nooks and crannies! Once dry, apply the clear sealer so that your paint doesn't crack upon wearing.

For the tassels, I've really been brainstorming on how to get them black. Spray paint, RIT dye, fabric paint? After much consideration, I went for a black Sharpie! (Photos not shown) Just apply several rounds of black marker until you get the desired color and the original doesn't show through!

Once everything is completely dry, remove tap and re-add the tassels.

All I was out was spray paint and sealer for a total cost of roughly $10! I am digging DIY projects! I feel like I'm transforming my closet, making it trendy without spending tons of money for something that won't be around long! Want to see how I styled them? Stay tuned.....
