As many of you know, I am a faithful
Lucky Magazine subscriber. I can't tell you how long I've had my subscription, but I can tell you I'm pretty sure its been forever! And, I pass it along to all of my friends as a gift! That's now much I love it!
In addition to my love of the magazine, I have a great love for their beauty editor Jean Godfrey-June. Her monthly beauty "column" is witty, insightful, organic and honestly, one of my favorite parts of the monthly publication. And recently, she started writing a Q/A segment; answering readers fashion questions that run the gamut of topics! A very useful segment, I might add.
So, while writing my
Spring Cleaning post about updating my makeup bag, my thoughts turned to Ms. Godfrey-June and I decided to make a bold move. I sent her a tweet to see if she would be interesting in a minor Q/A from a very small blogger like myself. I am ecstatic to say that she accepted! So without further ado, here is
Style My Way's Q & A with
Lucky Magazine's Jean Godfrey-June!
Style My Way (SMW): What brought you to Lucky Magazine?
Jean Godfrey-June (JGJ): I
loved the whole idea behind it—the democratization of fashion and
beauty, a women’s magazine that wasn’t about how awful it was to be a
woman, capturing that sense of personal indulgence you feel when you
read a catalogue you really like. Magazines had always felt inaccessible
— Lucky changed all that.
SMW: Did you major in journalism, and if so, did you always know you wanted to write? If your major wasn't journalism, what was? What made you want to write?
JGJ: I
planned to major in journalism—I spent all of high school furiously
working on the paper, dreaming of magazines, and believe it or not I
went to Univ. of Colorado because the subscription cards in all
magazines have the return address “Boulder,CO” on them. I thought I’d go
there and quickly get an internship at Vogue or Glamour! Anyway, my
first journalism class put me right to sleep with the history of
moveable type — so I went with American Studies (which involved English,
art history, and a few reporting classes).
SMW: At what age did you buy your first beauty product and what was it?
JGJ: My
first beauty product was a Lancome kohl eyeliner. They still make it. It
still rules. It made me feel wildly sexy and sophisticated.
SMW: What do you look for in a concept when creating your monthly beauty segment?
JGJ: I create the entire beauty section. I don’t look for concepts as much as I look for products I really love.
SMW: What designers, writers and/or artists inspire you?
JGJ: Some
of my favorite writers are Hilton Als, Joan Dideon, Mario Vargas Llosa,
Nabokov, Susan Orlean, Joyce Carol Oates ... I could list and list and
list and I would never really finish. I love Marni and Prada most of
all, designerwise, and artists —sort of like writers, possible to go on
forever! Like the rest of the country, I’m currently very inspired by
Cindy Sherman. Mary Ellen Mark’s work always sticks in my head and
inspires me, I love Barbara Kruger, Rachel Feinstein. Can’t go wrong
with a Tiepolo or a Titian...
And finally...
SMW: If you could have only one product to use for the rest of your life, what would it be?
JGJ: I think if I was only allowed one product I would just give up.
